After losing his family to ruthless criminals, Frank Castle becomes the Punisher – and this is his onscreen evolution…animated!
warning: spoilers ahead! In The Punisher (1989), Frank sports rugged biker gear – lacking the skull logo, a collared shirt, bulky jacket, and tactical boots with attached gaiters. He also has dyed black hair, painted-on stubble, and his knives feature skull-shaped handles. He takes on Yakuza and a ruthless crime boss before heading into the sewers to get... naked. Plus, his head is just one big nose that smells crime before it even happens – oh, uh wait, ummm, wrong movie.
In X-Men: The Animated Series, Frank wears his classic black spandex suit with a giant skull logo, pouches, and white gloves and boots. He rocks a headband around his blue hair and is equipped with a laser blaster. Although this Punisher is really a robot in disguise…
In the related Spider-Man show, Frank wears a teal-blue suit with black accessories and a smaller skull logo, topped with a brown trench coat. He has slick dark hair and an altered face. He’s equipped with goggles, an armoured jetpack, and non-lethal weaponry.
In the 2004 Punisher film, Castle wears dark trousers and a black shirt with a grungy skull logo – a gift from his son – paired with combat boots and a leather trench coat. Later, he wears an armoured vest with a painted skull. In this film, he tracks down the crime boss who wiped out his entire extended family.
This Frank returns in a fan film doing his dirty laundry, though the iconic T-shirt goes unworn.
In Punisher War Zone, Frank wears a sweater with added patches, cargo pants, and fingerless gloves. His body armour has a neck guard and a small faded skull logo. To save a mother and child, he takes on Jigsaw – uh, whoops... I mean this Jigsaw. Then he goes on his merry way.
The Super Hero Squad show gives us a comic-accurate beefy Frank, who despises Brussels sprouts.
Avengers Assemble features a bulkier Castle wearing a grey T-shirt with an elongated skull emblem. Plus, he’s packing serious weaponry.
Iron Man: Rise of Technovore’s Punisher wears a brown ensemble, complete with shoulder protection, forearm guards, and his classic trench coat. He blasts a few targets, then assists Tony Stark with intel.
In the follow-up, Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher, Frank ditches the trench coat and shoulder guards. He’s larger, wears darker clothes, has a bigger emblem, taller boots, and a rugged new face. Frank is briefly brainwashed, but then helps take on a robot army.
Mission Demolition features a workout-ready Lego Punisher.
In the Daredevil series, after committing serious punishment, an imprisoned Frank gets a skull-shaped blood stain on his jumpsuit. Once free, he sports dark fatigues with rolled-up sleeves. His armoured vest has skull-shaped plating, covered by a messy skull logo. He pairs this with a dark trench coat.
In his spin-off show, Frank adds a hoodie, but he quickly ditches the vest and goes “full hipster”. He later cleans up and sports a black sweater, combat pants with knee support, and a new vest with a brighter skull logo. He then goes after some of the people responsible for his family’s fate.
Season 2 finds him wearing civilian clothes, which he pairs with his battle-damaged vest. Later, he suits up in tactical pants. Frank protects a young woman from a “holy hitman” and takes on pretty-boy Jigsaw. Then he pops on a fresh vest and his duster for continued adventures.
In Daredevil Born Again, his combat pants feature prominent knee pads, his vest is more compact, and he wears a collared shirt with US flag-branded pockets. He cuts his bushy hair before taking on corrupt cops wearing his symbol. Though he’s imprisoned, he finds a quick exit.
Frank grows his beard out for the Disney+ special, One Last Kill, and – in flashbacks – sports a new duster. After a hit is put on him, Frank deals with wave after wave of bad guys. This reinvigorates him to suit up in a pristine combat suit with a dark torso section, updated shoulder logos, and added gloves. His streamlined vest features a full skull design and abdominal ammo holders. Plus, he has a fresh beard trim.
Brand New Day’s worn fatigues have less prominent knee protection; he has no shoulder logos or gloves, fewer ammo holders and his vest is stylised with a faded logo and three knives forming the skull’s teeth. He’s also clean-shaven again. This time, he crosses paths with Spider-Man, leading to an unexpected team-up!
But no matter where they take Frank, he’ll always be our Punisher.
