The Crypt Keeper keeps getting dug up to tell terror tales, but how has he evolved? From comics to the big screen to TV and beyond, let’s find out now...boils and ghouls!
warning: spoilers ahead! In the original EC comics, debuting in 1949, the Crypt Keeper wears a ragged blue cloak, is barefoot, has long white hair, and warts on his face. He reluctantly shares the spotlight with the Old Witch and the Vault Keeper, while his origin comic shows an Egyptian Mummy and a two-headed Circus freak bearing a baby Crypty.
The mass-market paperback released in 1964 Crypt Keeper is less pale and wears a brown pantsuit and a grey overcoat… though this design was never used again.
In his 1972 film debut, the Crypt Keeper looks like a regular old man. He wears sandals and a brown monk robe with a hanging center flap. This storyteller entertains five people with their own fates, and then sends them to their fiery dooms.
In the HBO show, running from 1989 to 1996, he’s more skeletal, much shorter, and wears a ragged robe with tattered red sections. He has long white hair, bad dental hygiene, and no nose. Plus, his piercing blue eyes were borrowed from Chucky. He’s also given his signature voice. “Hello, kiddies! Am I ready for prime time? Hahaha.” His Egyptian Mummy mother and Circus Freak father get busy in his origin episode to create an, um...adorable baby Crypt Keeper?
Later on, his hair becomes less straggly and his hand detailing increases. He dresses up for every occasion he can – like pumping iron with Arnold Schwarzenegger! He also released two awesome theatrical films, Demon Knight (1995) and Bordello of Blood (1996), which gave him the Hollywood red carpet treatment. Around this time, he was also one of many ghostly apparitions in Casper (1995).
In the animated series, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, the Crypt Keeper is taller, has less rotted teal skin, yellow eye whites, only three top teeth, and wispy hair. While promo art displays him in a purple cloak and gravedigger outfit, his intro clothing is actually an olive green suit, with brown loafers and a blue bowtie.
The second season simplifies his design, gives him brighter colours, and adds one additional bottom tooth. The new intro outfits him in purple lounge wear and shows him taking the form of a moon and a gargoyle. This ghoul changes his outfits, well… more than Cher. Season 2 also introduces his bothersome rivals.
The third season cheapens Crypt Keeper’s design. He has larger feet, fewer teeth, sharp nails, and luscious hair. He now disguises himself in different workwear to interact with the main stories. Plus, if you want to see him extremely buff or wearing only a towel, this cartoon has you covered.
In his live-action game show, Secrets of the Cryptkeepers Haunted House, the Crypt Keeper wears light grey robes with a shoulder piece that has shredded fabric underneath. He has fewer teeth, altered skin detailing, and messy hair. He and his human co-host force children into dangerous challenges.
The 1996 video game Crypt Keeper is uncanny-looking and wears a pinstriped getup with a torn undershirt. He also has brighter skin, slender fingers, smaller eyes, and thinner legs. He can also transform into a flying insect. However, this ghoulish game was never released.
In 2001, Kids WB reused old Crypt Keeper clips to introduce kids' cartoons, while new footage shows him looking dishevelled, but he’s really only brought out for special occasions.
The DVD menu Crypt Keeper has grey skin, a pointed jaw, and thicker hair. He shows off his doctorate and film degree while you choose an episode to watch.
In the movie Ritual, he wears a Miami Vice-style white suit, has a boxier face, less-detailed tanned skin, a smaller nose, and dreadlocks. He surrounds himself with beachside beauties while introducing a mediocre movie.
The Tales From Cryptville’s 3D Cryptkeeper is hideous. He has squished facial features, longer hair, and wears a pristine tuxedo. But this movie pitch got the axe.
For FearNet in 2012, he resembles his DVD menu look but appears darker with greener irises. He sports various decades of styles to count down to the 2013 New Year.
The Solar Opposites use “sci-fi” to create their Crypt Keeper. This one wears purple robes with bloody accents, has bony hands and feet, shorter hair, and a bulging eye. He apparently used to be someone's deceased aunt and uses the power of storytelling to stop a murder. “Here’s a tale about Randal...he sucks! Hahahahaha”
In 2026, the Crypt Keeper returns for AMC’s Hosting duties - well, mostly Bacardi Ads! He has more human proportions and greener skin. His face is fuller, with a rounded mouth, smaller nose, beady eyes, and a fivehead. He’s outfitted in a white nightgown, loungewear, and a red tracksuit. This corpse has clearly been hitting the bottle while hyping up FearFest’s horror movie lineup.
And with many parodies, like The Simpsons, Robot Chicken, In Living Color, and MAD – plus odd-looking amusement park appearances, the Crypt Keeper will never stay in his grave.
